Manchester comparison
Liverpool or York from Manchester.
Both plans can start with free general museum admission. The stronger distinction is what you want to see, followed by the exact journey and the value of the overnight.

Two museum interests, not a price ranking
Museum of Liverpool covers city history on the waterfront; Walker Art Gallery is a separate art option. National Railway Museum in York offers a railway-focused anchor. General admission at these venues is free, but separately priced exhibitions or extras can change your activity budget.
Check the exact Manchester station
For these two routes, Liverpool starts at Manchester Piccadilly and York at Manchester Victoria. TPE offers direct York services, though some journey results require a change. Include travel to the correct station and check the connections in both directions.
What could change the plan
Liverpool’s Maritime Museum and International Slavery Museum are closed. York’s railway museum construction changes entrances and the route between halls; the elevated City Walls can close in unsafe weather. Neither plan depends on treating an uncertain attraction as a guaranteed stop.
Choose the weekend that fits
Choose Liverpool for the city-history-and-art combination and York for railway collections. If the second day would only repeat the first, cost a same-day version. An overnight may still be worthwhile for an evening and a slower pace, but name that benefit rather than assuming two days is better value.
Choose the sequence
Compare the Liverpool itinerary with the York itinerary. The Manchester departure desk links the station-specific route notes. Put either plan through the GBP worksheet before calling it affordable.
